Crucifix Dial
Signed by Georg Hartmann
Dated 1541; Nuremberg
Ivory; 39 x 96 x 17 mm

Crucifix dials were not uncommon, since the cross had a very strong symbolic meaning. The origin of the significance of the cross as a symbol lies not only in the Crucifixion, but also in the Old Testament, where the Israelites dying from snakebites were healed by looking at the cross made by Moses on God's order (Numbers 21, 6-9).
